a thanksgiving story

Once upon a time...Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday!

Amazing food. Eternal leftovers. Counting blessings. Out-of-town family and friends. The hope of Christmas looming in the air! And this year, something new...a very short workweek that included my boss bringing a small but cozy thanksgiving dinner to us at work on Wednesday.

Unlike previous years, our family didn't have dinner at our house this year, but instead headed over to our grandparent's place, where my entire mom's side of the family had gathered for the first time in nine years. Nine years!!

We ate dinner in the church on my grandparents' property, which wasn't as cozy as a home, but was the only place that could fit all sixteen cousins, four uncles, four aunts, my grandparents, and great-grandma "Nana". And later in the afternoon my mom's cousin Josiah and his wife Dana and their four kids popped by, so it was even more lively!

Anyways, this year I made the sweet potato casserole, my traditional contribution ever since we found a recipe so loaded with sugar, butter, and pecans that I shall never loathe yams again! ;) It was delicious...and utterly unhealthy. But, you know, I only make it once a year...

Somehow (the details are kind of...err...fuzzy) this very lifelike rat ended up on the pie table. Still, no one knows who could have POSSIBLY done such a thing. ;) Muahahaha. And they may never know.

Did I mention that out of the sixteen cousins, only three of them are girls?! And that includes my sister and I. Needless to say, we play a lotttt of football! (; p.s. LOOK AT ANNIE!! uhh. the dog, that is.

I tried everything I could think of to get Jonathan to smile! That's not his thing, apparently.

Here Matthew and Jacob are climbing trees...the same ones Richmond and I used to climb when were their age!

After lunch, Uncle Paul, Uncle Steven, Grandpa and I competed in a rather vicious round of washers, which is kind of a variation on horseshoes. Mom got ahold of the camera and I waved...but my hand just looks awkward.

Meanwhile, the football got stuck in a tree and Greyson went up after it...

Eventually, they corralled all the cousins together for some sort of once-in-a-lifetime group photo, since by the time we all get together again, it might be 2018 at the rate we're going. :/

For some reason, Grandpa randomly shouted, "Everyone tackle Richmond!!" And so...that's what's goin' on. But I'm being distracted by a small, shiny object.

Aaron gets lost in a book. I just love his hair.SO.much.

Po sneaking a kiss...off of the table. ;)

I just feel so thankful for such a loving, supportive, sometimes crazy but mostly amazing family! :)

The end.
