I can't really talk about track without mentioning its significant other (and possibly better half)...FIELD! Can I? No. Absolutely not. So here I am again, actually writing another post within a period of 48 hours. I impress even myself, sometimes. :)
So there I was--assessment day [cue: dun...dun...DUN!!], after several weeks of lifting dumbbells in hopes of enhancing my biceps (don't laugh. please!) so that my...ermmm...rendezvous with throwing that menacing little shot-put ball thingy would be better than last year.
It WAS better than last year (surprise, surprise!) when I had shut my eyes, gritted my teeth, and chunked my heavy circular nemesis--every fiber of my being straining--only to have it land practically at my feet. This year, I actually got it to go somewhere, although my performance was so miserable that I volunteered to carry the assessment clipboard around for the remainder of the evening to shield my results from any curious eyes.
So with the exception of throwing the--thing, the rest of the assessments were downright fun! I already knew I wasn't going to be a hurdler, high-jumper, or pole-vaulter (okay so I can't go up and over things...some people just aren't coordinated like that!!)
There was, however, a silver lining. It's name is O Most Glorious of all Field Events Triple Jump! I was enthralled the moment I opened the email naming my field event. I wasn't exactly sure what triple jump was, or how it worked, although I had a vague idea. But none of that mattered! I had a FIELD EVENT!!! Track had just become that much greater.
I loved triple jump from the very first time I ran down the narrow runway and hit the white board, skipping twice off of my right foot and catapulting into the sand pit off of my left. For me, triple jump was a million (okay, three million) times better than long jump...why jump once when you can do it thrice?
Jumping at meets was just way too fun--unlike running events where I would hyperventilate, jabber uncontrollably, shake like a leaf, and visit the bathroom several times beforehand, with TJ, I never felt anxious at all. I love jumping! There was positively nothing to be nervous about.
Triple jump is amaZing. Do it. Or actually, don't. Because that would be extra competition for me. So yeah, forget everything I said about triple jump being fun and amazing. It's actually complex and only a few *cough* nimble, agile, and bouncy people can do it. ;)
While I'm on the subject of field events, I might as well mention that (only once!) at the homeschool state meet I threw a javelin. But, if you know anything about my throwing skills, it kind of isn't worth mentioning. So yeah. We just aren't going to talk about it. At all.
